Bismuth Magma [Magma Bism.]
Milk of Bismuth.

This is practically the same as the preparation formerly  recognized by the U. S. IX: It contains not less than 5.6 Gm. of Bi2O3 in each  100 cc.,
corresponding to not less than 7 Gm of bisrnuth sub nitrate in each 100 cc.  N.F.
The dose is from one to two fluidrachms (4 - 8 cc.)

MASSA COPAIBAE. N.F.
Mass of Copaiba [ Mass. Copaib.]
Solidified Copaiba.

This is a combination of copaiba with a hydrated magnesium  oxide reduced to a pilular consistence. It represents about 94 per cent. of  copaiba.
The dose is from fifteen to thirty grains (1 - 2 Gm)

MEL ROSAE ET SODII  BORATIS. N. F.
Honey of Rose and Sodium Borate [Mel. Ros. et Sod. Bor.]
Honey of Rose with Borax.

This preparation is made with borax, glycerin, and  honey of rose. It is used as an astringent application.

Honey of Sodium Borate [Mel. Sod. Bor.] Mel Boracis; Honey and Borax.

This  preparation is made with borax, glycerin, and clarified honey. It is used as a local application in sore  throats.

MENTHOL CAMPHORATUM. N.F. Campho-Menthol, N. F. III
Camphorated Menthol [Menthol. Camph.] Camphor arid Menthol.

Equal parts by  weight of camphor and menthol with a small proportion of alcohol added. Applied  locally in neuralgia.

MISTURA ADSTRINGENS. N.F. Mistura Adstringen et  Escharotica, N. F. III
Astringent Mixture [Mist. Adstring.] Villate's Mixture
.
This preparation is  made from solution of leadsubacetate, copper sulphate, zinc sulphate and diluted acetic  acid. It should be well shaken before dispensing to insure the even distribution  of the precipitated lead sulphate. It is used externally as an astringent and  escharotic.

MISTURA CARMINATIVA. N. F.
Carminative Mixture [Mist. Carminat.] Dalby's Carminative.

It is made from  magnesium carbonate, potassium carbonate, tincture of opium, oils of caraway,  fennel, and peppermint, with syrup and water. It contains 1 - 40th of a grain of  opium in 10 minims of the finished mixture.
The dose for an infant is from five  to ten minims ( 0.3-0.6 cc.)

MISTURA CHLORALIS ET POTASSII
BROMIDI COMPOSITA. N.F.

Compound Mixture of Chloral and Potassium Bromide [Mist. Chloral. et Pot.  Brom. Co.] Chloral and Bromide Compound.
This preparation represents about 12 grains each of hydrated chloral and  potassium bromide, and 1/8 grain each of the extracts of cannabis and hyoscyamus  in each fluidrachm of the finished, mixture.
The dose is one fluidrachm. ( 4 cc.  )

MISTURA CHLOROFORMI ET MORPHINAE COMPOSITA. N.F.
Compound Mixture of Chloroform and Morphine [Mist. Chlorof. et Morph.  Co.]
Mistura Chloroformi et Cannabis Indicae Composita, N .F. III; Chloroform  Anodyne.

This preparation contains chloroform, ether, tincture of cannabis,  tincture of capsicum, morphine sulphate, oil of peppermint, glycerin, water, and alcohol. About 7.5  minims of chloroform, 11 minims of tincture of cannabis, 1.5 minims of tincture  of capsicum, 1 -7th of a grain of morphine sulphate, are represented in I fluidrachm of the finished mixture. It should not be confounded with chlorodyne, (see Tinctura Ohloroformi et Morphinae Composita, Part I), which is a much stronger preparation.
The dose is from thirty to sixty minims ( 2-4 cc.)

MISTURA  COPAIBAE. N.F.
Copaiba Mixture [Mist. Copaib.] Lafayette Mixture.

This preparation contains  copaiba, spirit of nitrous ether, compound tincture of lavender, solution of  potassium hydroxide, syrup, and mucilage of acacia. There is 7.5 minims each of  copaiba and sweet spirit of niter in one fluidrachm.
The dose is from two to four  fluidrachms ( 8 - 15 cc.)

MISTURA COPAIBAE ET OPII. N.F.
Mixture of Copaiba and Opium [Mist. Copaib. et Opii.] Chapman's Mixture.
This  preparation contains double the proportions of copaiba and spirit of nitrous  ether in the above, and in addition two minims of tincture of opium in each  fluidrachm. It is used in gonorrhea.
The dose is from one to two fluidrac4ms (4 -  8 cc.)

MISTURA MAGNESIA ET ASAFOETIDAE ET OPII. N.F.
Mistura Magnesim et Asafetida, N. F. III Mixture of Magnesia, Asafetida and  Opium
[Mist. Mag., Asafoet. et Opii.] Dewee's Carminative.

This preparation contains  5 per cent. magnesium carbonate, 7.5 per cent. tincture of asafetida, 1 per  cent. tincture of opium, with sugar and water. It is used as an anodyne and  carminative.
The dose is from two to four fluidrachms ( 8 -15 cc.)

MISTURA OLEO.  BALSAMICA. N.F.
Oleo Balsamic Mixture [Mist. OI.aBalsam.] Hoffmann's Balsam.

This preparation  contains 0.4 per cent. each of the oils of lavender, thyme, lemon, nutmeg, and  cinnamon, with eugenol, balsam of Peru, and alcohol. Its greatest value lies in  its pleasant odor.

MISTURA OPII ET CHLOROFORMI COMPOSITA. N. F.
Compound Mixture of Opium and Chloroform [Mist. Opii et Chlorof. Co.]
Squibb's Diarrhea Mixture.

This preparation contains 20 per cent. each of  tincture of opium and spirit of camphor, with tincture of capsicum, chloroform and alcohol.
The dose is from thirty to forty  minims (2 - 2 . 6 cc.)

MISTURA OPII ET RHEI COMPOSITA.
Compound Mixture of Opium and Rhubarb [Mist. Opii et Rhei Co.] Sun Cholera  Mixture.
This preparation contains 10 per cent. each of tincture of capsicum and  tincture of rhubarb, and 20 per cent. each of tincture of opium, spirit of camphor, and spirit of  peppermint, dissolved in alcohol.
The dose is from twenty to forty minims ( 1.3 -  2.5 cc.)

MISTURA PECTORALIS, STOKES. N.F.
Stokes' Expectorant [Mist. Pect. Stokes]

Each fluidrachm of this preparation  represents, approximately, I grain of ammonium carbonate, 2 minims each of  fluidextracts of squill and senega, and 10 minims of paregoric dissolved in  water and syrup of tolu. It is used as an expectorant.
The dose is one fluidrachm  ( 4 cc. )

MISTURA RHEI ALKALINA. N.F.

Alkaline Mixture of Rhubarb [Mist. Rhei Alk.] Elixir Rhei Alkalinum;  Neutralizing Cordial
.
This preparation contains in each fluidrachm 1 minim of fluidextract of  rhubarb, half a minim of fluidextract of hydrastis and 1 grain of potassium  carbonate.
The official dose is given as one fluiddrachm ( 4 cc. ) but this is  evidently intended for Infants; the adult dose would be one or two fluidounces  (15 - 80 cc.)

MISTURA RHEI COMPOSITA. N.F.
Mistura Rhei et Sodae, U.S,P. VIII Compound Mixture of Rhubarb [Mist.Rhei  Co.]

Mixture of Rhubarb and Soda.
Each fluidrachm of this contains approximately 1  minim of fluidextract of rhubarb, 0.2 minim of fluidextract of ipecac and 2  grains of sodium bicarbonate and 2 minims of spirit of peppermint.
The dose given by the N.F. is one fluidrachm ( 4 cc. ) which is obviously intended for  infants.

MUCILAGO CHONDRI. N.F.
Mucilage of Chondrus [Mucil. Chondr.] Mucilage of Irish Moss.

This preparation  contains 3 per cent. of Irish moss in water. It is used as an emulsifying agent  and demulcent.

MUCILAGO SASSAFRAS MEDULLA. N.F.
Mucilage of Sassafras Pith [Mucil. Sassaf. Medul.]

This preparation contains 3  gramme of .sassafras pith in each 100 cc. It is a bland mucilage used  principally for eye lotions and should always be freshly prepared.
The dose is  four fluidrachms ( 15 cc. )

MULLAE. Mulls N.F.
Steatine; Salve Mulle.

The mulls or salve mulls are very stiff ointments  spread upon soft muslin (mull) similar to a plaster. The base is usually suet or lard, but wax or even lead plaster are  used in some of the members of the group. They are usually made in a wholesale  manner, by machinery, but the N.F. gives formulas for the retail preparation of  several.

This  preparation contains 10 per cent. of salicylic acid with a mixture of  benzoinated suet and benzoinated lard.

UnguentumCreosoti Salicylatum Extensum.
This preparation contains 10 per cent.  of salicylic acid and 20 per cent. of creosote in a mixture of benzoinated suet  and yellow wax.

This preparation contains  0.2 per cent. of corrosive sublimate in a mixture of benzoinated suet, benzoinated lard, and alcohol.

This preparation is made  with zinc oxide, 10 per cent., in a mixture of benzoinated suet and benzoinated lard.

This preparation contains phenol,  menthol, thymol, camphor, benzoic acid, eucalyptol, oil of cinnamon, oil of clove and methyl salicylate in small proportions, in  solution in light liquid petrolatum. It is used in the form of a nebula or spray.

This preparation contains 5 per cent. of  eucalyptol in solution in light liquid petrolatum.

This preparation contains I per  cent. each of menthol and camphor, with smaller amounts of methyl salicylate, eucalyptoI, and oil of cinnamon in solution in light liquid petrolatum.

Thymol Spray [Nebul. Thymol.]

This preparation contains I per cent. of thymol  in solution in light liquid petrolatum.

ODONTALGICUM. N.F.
Toothache Remedy [Odontalg.]

This weirdly named' mixture p;eparation is a  mixture of I part of oil of cinnamon, 2 parts of phenol and 3 parts of methyl salicylate. It is intended for local application  to carious teeth.

OLEA INFUSA. N. F.
Infused Oils [Ol . Inf.]

The formula for these is a general one. They are made  by moistening the air dried drug with alcohol and ammonia water and infusing  with warm sesame oil they are of 10 per cent. strength.

This preparation contains 25 per cent. of  quinine in oleic acid and is used as a local anesthetic.

Oleate of Veratrine [Oleat. Veratrin.]

This preparation contains 2 per cent.  of veratrine in equal parts of olive oil and oleic acid, and is used as an anodyne and rubefacient. It should be used cautiously on  account of the danger of systemic poisoning.

OLEOSACCHARA. N.F.
Oil-sugars. Elaosacchara.

The N.F. gives a general formula for triturating any  prescribed 0il ( 2 per cent. ) w1th sugar. What the need is of such a title is  not apparent.

OLEORESINA CUBEBAE. N. F.
Oleoresin of Cubeb [Oleores. Cubeb.]

This is prepared by exhausting cubeb  with alcohol and evaporating the extract. It is a dark greenish-brown liquid whose consistency varies according to the relative  proportions of oil and resin in the original drug. After standing for some time  it deposits a waxy and crystalline precipitate which should be rejected, only  the liquid portion being used.
Dose, from five to ten minims ( 0.3 - 0.6 cc. ) 

OLEUM AETHEREUM. N.F.
Ethereal Oil [Ol Aether.]

This is a volatile liquid consisting of equal  volumes of ether and of heavy oil of wine, pre-pared by distillation of alcohol with sulphuric acid. It is transparent,  nearly colorless, has a specific gravity of 0.905 at 25! C., a peculiar  aromatic odor, and a pungent taste. Preserve in small glass-stoppered bottles in  a cool place. It is used in the preparation of compound spirit of ether (Hoffmann's anodyne)

OLEUM HYOSCYAMI COMPOSITUM. N.F.
Compound Oil of Hyoscyamus [Ol. Hyosc. Co.] Balsamum Tranquillans.

This  preparation is made from 0.2 per cent. of the oils of lavender, peppermint,  rosemary, and thyme, with infused oil of hyoscyamus. It is used as an anodyne.

OLEUM PHENOLATUM. N.F.
Phenolated Oil [Ol. Phenol.] Oleum Carbolatum; Carbolized Oil.

It is made by  dissolving 5 per cent. of .phenol in olive oil. Used externally.

OLEUM  PHOSPHORATUM. N.F.
Phosphorated Oil [ Ol. Phosphorat.]

This preparation is made by dissolving 1  Gm. of phosphorus in 90 times its weight of expressed oil of almond with the aid  of water bath heat and adding to this solution enough ether to make 100 Gm. It  is a clear, yellowish liquid, having the odor of phosphorus and of ether, and  free from, undissolved parrticles. N.F. It affords an excellent means of  administering phosphorus.
The dose is one minim ( 0.05 cc. )

OLEUM RICINI  AROMATICUM. N.F.
Aromatic Castor Oil [Ol. Ricin. Arom.]

This is castor oil flavored with  gluside ( 0.05per Cent ) oils of clove and cinnamon, vanillin, coumarin, and alcohol.
The dose is from one-half to one fluidounce (15-30  cc.)

OXYMEL SCILLAE. N.F.
Oxymel of Squill [Oxymel Scill.]

This preparation is made from 1 part of  vinegar of squill and 2 parts of clarified honey. Used as an expectorant.
The  dose is one fluidrachm ( 4 cc. )

PASTAE DERMATOLOGICAE. N.F.
Dermatologic Pastes.

These preparations are ointment-like mixtures of starch,  dextrin, zinc oxide, sulphur, calcium carbonate, or other medicinal substances made into a paste with glycerin, soft soap, petrolatum, etc., medicated with antiseptic or astringent agents and used in the practice of dermatologists.

PASTA  BETANAPHTHOLIS. N.F.
Betanaphthol Paste [Paat. Betanaphthol.] Pasta Naphtholis Lassar; Lassar's  Naphthol Paste.

This preparation, contains 10 per cent. of betanaphthol, 50 per cent. of  sulphur, 20 per cent. of petrolatum, and 20 per cent. of soft soap.

PASTA  DEXTRINATA. N.F.
Dextrinated Paste (Past. Dextrin.]

This preparation contains 33 per cent.  white dextrin, 33 per cent. glycerin and water. It is used as a vehicle.

PASTA RESORCINOLIS FORTIS. N.F.
Strong Resorcinol Paste [Past. Resorcin.Fort.] Lassar's Stronger Resorcinol  Paste.
This preparation contains 20 per cent. of resorcinol, zinc oxide, and  starch, together with 40 per cent. of light liquid petrolatum.

PASTA RESORCINOLIS MITIS. N.F.
Mild Resorcinol Paste [Past. Resorcin. Mit.] Lassar's Mild Resorcinol  Paste.

This preparation contains 10 percent. of resorcinol with 25 per cent. each  of zinc oxide and starch, and 40 per cent. of light liquid petrolatum.

Zinc Paste [Past. Zinc.] Lassars Zinc Paste.

This preparation contains 2 per  cent. of salicylic acid, 24 per cent. of zinc oxide and starch, and 50 per  cent.. of .petrolatum. Used as an antiseptic and protectIve in skin  dlseaese.

Soft Zinc Paste [Past. Zinc Moll.] Unna's Soft Zinc Paste.

This preparation  contains 25 per cent. each of zinc oxide, precipitated calcium carbonate,  linseed oil, and solution of calcium hydroxide (lime water)

This preparation contains 15 per cent. of zinc oxide, 10 per cent. of  precipitated sulphur, 5 per cent. of purified siliceous earth, and 70 per cent  of benzoinated lard. It is used as an antizymotic and protective.       

PEPSINUM  SACCHARATUM. N.F.
Saccharated Pepsin [Pepsin. Sacchar.]

This preparation is a 10 per cent.  triturate of pepsin with sugar of milk.
The dose is from thirty to sixty grains (  2 - 4 Gm.)

PETROXOLINA MEDICATA. N. F.
Medicated Petroxolins.

These are made by dissolving the indicated medicinal  substances in liquid petroxolin.
Contrary to a common belief, liquid petroxolin does not readily penetrate the  skin and the chief use of these preparations is as local remedies.

This preparation is a 10 per  cent. fresh solution of betanaphthol in liquid petroxolin.

This contains 10 per cent. of ichthyol in  liquid petroxolin.

This preparation is a 25 per cent. mixture of  oil of cade and liquid petroxolin.

This is a solution  of 25 per cent. each of chloroform and camphor in liquid petroxolin.

This is a mixture of creosote 20 per  cent., and olive oil 5 per cent., in liquid petroxolin. It is used as an antiputrescent and antiseptic.

PETROXOLINUM EUCALYPTOLIS.  N.F.
Eucalyptol Petroxolin [Petrox. Eucalyptol.]

This is a 20 per cent.' solution  of eucalyptol in liquid petroxolin.

This is a mixture of guaiacol 20 per  cent., olive oil 5 per cent., and liquid petroxolin.

This preparation  contains 30 per cent. of mercury extinguished with 13 per cent. of hydrous wool fat and 2 per cent. oleic acid, and solid petroxolin added to make 100  parts.

This contains 10  Gm. of iodine in 100 cc. of liquid petroxolin.

This  preparation is a solution of 5 per cent. iodine in liquid  petroxolin.

Petrolatum Saponatum Liquidum, Liquid  Petrox.

This preparation is made from light liquid petrolatum, oleic acid,  stronger ammonia water, and 15 per cent. alcohol and perfumed with oil of lavender. It is a  yellowish-brown liquid, miscible with ether, chloroform, petroleum benzin or acetone and producing an  emulsion like mixture when added to twice its volume of water. It is used as a  basis for various medicated petroxolins.

This preparation contains 10 Gm. of  menthol in 100 cc. of liquid petroxolin. It is used as a local anesthetic.

This preparation is a  solution of methyl salicylate, 20 per ,cent., in. liquid petroxolin. It is used as an antlrheumatlc.

This preparation is a 5 per cent. solution  of phenol in liquid petroxolin.

This contains 12.5 per  cent. phenol and 37.5 per cent. camphor in liquid petroxolin.

Petrolatum Saponatum Spissum; Solid  Petrox.

This preparation is a mixture of 35 per cent white wax, 20 .per cent.  light liquid petrolatum, 32 per cent. oleic acid, 3 per cent. oil of lavender, 5 per cent. alcohol,  and 5 per cent. stronger ammonia water. It is used as a vehicle for  ointments.

PETROXOLINUM SULPHURATUM. N.F.
Sulphurated Petroxolin [Petrox. Sulphur.]

This preparation is a mixture of 3  per cent. sublimed sulphur, 37 per cent. linseed oil, 30 per cent. oleic acid,  in liquid petroxolin.

Compound Sulphurated Petroxolin [Petrox. Sulphur. Co.]

This preparation is  made from 10 per cent. sulphurated petroxolin, 10 per cent. oil of cade, 0.3 per  cent. thymol, 3 per cent. eucalyptol, 30 per cent. oil of turpentine, and liquid  petroxolin.

PHENOL IODATUM. N.F.
Iodized Phenol [Phenol. lodat.]

This is made from iodine 20 per cent., phenol  60 per cent., and glycerin. It is an active germicide.

PILULAE. N.F. Pills

Pills are globular or ovoid dosage forms of medicinal substances intended for  internal administration. Each pill weighs not less than 0.06 Gm., nor more than  0.5 Gm. If they weigh less than 0.06 Gm. and more than 0.02 Gm. each they are  known as " Granules " if the weight is less than 0.02 Gm., they are usually  designated as " Parvules." The ingredients are massed by the aid of selected  excipients. For the extemporaneous coating of pills by the pharmacist, formulas  and working directions for the following methods are supplied: gelatin, sugar ,  cocoa, tolu, silver, and salol coatings. For the coating of the so-called "  enteric pills," the use of salol is recommended. ( See also Pilulae, Part I. )

Each pill contains about  1/2 grains each of aloe and asafetida.
The dose is one or two pills.

Each pin contains abotit 1 grain  each of aloe and exsiccated ferrous sulphate.

Each pill contains 2  grains of aloes, 1/2 grain of rhubarb, � grain of angelica seed, 1/4 grain each  of inula, of saffron, and fennel, 1/8 grain of zeodoary root, of cubeb, myrrh,  agaric and camphor, and 1.1/2 grains of quinine sulphate, with a sufficient  quantity of extract of gentian to form a mass.
The dose is one to three pills one  to three times daily.

This is practically a mixture of 86.6 parts of boric acid and 12.5 parts of  zinc sulphate perfumed with traces of Halicylic acid, phenol, eucalyptol, menthol and  thymol.

PULVIS AROMATICUS. N.F.
Aromatic Powder [Pulv. Arom.]

This is the sal;ne as the article formerly  recognized by the U. S. IX. It is a mixture of 35 parts each of cinnamon and ginger with 15 parts each of cardamom and  nutmeg.
The dose is from ten to twenty grains ( 0.6 -1.2 Gm.)

PULVIS AROMATICUS  RUBEFACIENS. N.F.
Rubefacient Spice Powder [Pulv. Arom. Rubefac.]

Consists of clove, 30 per  cent., Saigon cinnamon, 30 per cent., ginger, 20 per cent., and capsicum, 20 per  cent.
Note.- When rubefacient spice powder is needed for Spice Poultice, place  the required quantity in a flat muslin bag and moisten it with either diluted  alcohol or vinegar, previously heated. N.F. It is used only externally and  should not be confused with the preceding preparation.

PULVIS CRETAE AROMATICUS.  N. F.
Aromatic Powder of Chalk [Pulv. Cret. Arom.]

It contains 8 per cent. of, cinnamon, 6 per cent. of nutmeg, 3 per cent. of clove, 2 per cent. of cardamom  seed, 25 per cent. of prepared chalk and 56 per cent. of sugar. It is used in  diarrhea.
The dose is thirty to sixty grains (2 - 4 Gm. )

Calomel and Jalap.This is a mixture of 34 Gm. of mild chloride of mercury and  66 Gm. of jalap.
The dose is ten grains ( 0.65 Gm.)

It contains  60 per cent. of bayberry bark; 30 per cent. of ginger, 5 per cent. of capsicum,  and 5 per cent. of clove.
The dose is fifteen grains ( 1 Gm. )

PULVIS PANCREATINI  COMPOSITUS. N.F.
Compound Pancreatin Powder [Pulv. Pancreat. Co.] Peptonizing Powder.

This is a  mixture of 20 Gm. of pancreatin and 80 Gm. of sodium bicarbonate. Twenty five  grains of this powder are sufficient to peptonize 1 pint of fresh cow's milk. Used for preparing predigested foods.

PULVIS RHEI ET MAGNESlAE ANISATUS. N.F.
Anisated Powder of Rhubarb and Magnesia [Pulv. Rhei et Magnes. Anis.]

Compound Anise Powder.
It contains 35 per cent. of powdered rhubarb and 65 per cent. of heavy magnesia, with anethol and alcohol. It is laxative and  carminative.
The dose for infants is five grains (0.3 Gm )
