INFUSUM BRAYERAE. N. F.
Infusum of Brayera [Inf. Brayer.]
This infusion, which must be freshly prepared, is made with 6 per cent. of  the drug in boiling water.
The dose is eight fluidounces ( 250 cc. )


INFUSUM GENTIANAE COMPOSITUM. N.F.
Compound Infusion of Gentian [Inf.Gent. Co.]

This elixir contains 3 per cent. of gentian, flavored with coriander, and  bitter orange peel. It is used as a tonic, and is made by percolation.
The dose is from one to four fluldrachms ( 4 -15 cc. )

INFUSUM ROSAE COMPOSITUM. N.F.
Compound Infusion of Rose [Inf. Ros. Co.]

This preparation which deserves a larger use on account of its pleasant  flavor and beautiful color is made from red rose, diluted sulphuric acid, sugar  and water. It is used as a vehicle or mild astringent.
The dose is three fluidounces ( 100 cc.)

INFUSUM SENNAE COMPOSITUM, N.F.
Compound Infusion of Senna [Inf. Senn. Co.]

This is the same as the former preparation of the U. S. IX. It represents 6  per cent. of senna and 12 per cent. each of manna and magnesium sulphate. 
The dose is four fluidounces (120 cc.)

INUNCTUM MENTHOLIS. N F.
Menthol Inunction (Inunct. Menthol.]

The necessity for the peculiar name of this ointment is not apparent. It is  simply a 5 per cent. ointment of menthol in hydrous wool-fat.

INUNCTUM MENTHOLIS COMPOSITUM. N.F.
Compound Menthol Inunction [Inunct. Menthol. Co.]

This preparation contains 5 per cent. of menthol and 10 per cent. of methyl  salicylate in hydrous wool fat;. It is counter-irritant as well as locally  anesthetic.

LAC FERMENTATUM N.F.
Fermented Milk [Lac. Ferment. Kumyss]

This well known dietetic preparation is made from fresh cows milk, compressed  yeast, and sugar, properly fermented, and is used as a food for invalids.
The dose is eight fluidounces ( 250 cc.)

LAVATIO ORI. N.F.
Mouth Wash [Lavat. Ori]

This is a sweetened aromatic solution of soap colored with fuchsin. Its  therapeutic virtues are not very obvious.

LINIMENTUM ACONITI ET CHLOROFORMI. N.F.
Liniment of Aconite and Chloroform [Lin. Aconit. et Chlorof.]

This preparation contains 4.5 per cent. fluidextract of aconite and 12.5 per  cent. of chloroform in a mixture of alcohol and soap liniment. It must not be  confused with the dental liniment of aconite.

LINIMENTUM AMMONIAE. N.F.
Ammonia Liniment [Lin. Ammon.] Hartshorn Liniment; Volatile.Liniment.

This is the former preparation of the U.S.IX. It is used externally as a  rubefacient.

LINIMENTUM BELLADONNAE.. N.F.
Belladonna Liniment [Lin. Bellad.]

This is, like the former preparation of the U.S. IX, a 5 per cent. solution  of camphor in fluid-extract of belladonna.

LINIMENTUM CALAMINJE. N.F.
Calamine Liniment [Lin. Calam.]

This contains 8 per cent. each of prepared calamine and zinc oxide suspended  in lime liniment.

LINIMENTUM OPII COMPOSITUM. N. F.
Compound Liniment of Opium [Lin. Opii Co.] Canada Liniment.

This liniment contains 10 per cent. of tincture of opium, 22 per cent. of oil  of turpentine and 35 per cent. of ammonia water, with camphor, alcohol and oil of peppermint,  made into a somewhat permanent emulsion with fresh egg albumen. It is used as a  stimulating anodyne application.

LINIMENTUM SAPONA TO-CAMPHOR.ATUM. N.F.
Camphorated Soap Liniment [Lin.Sapon.- Camph.] Solid Opodeldoc.

This liniment contains freshly prepared sodium stearate made by combining  monohydrated sodium carbonate and stearic acid, perfumed with camphor, Oils of  thyme and rosemary and ammonia water. It is a useless survival of a former  fad.

LINIMENTUM SAPONIS MOLLIS COMPOSITUM. N.F.
Compound Liniment of Soft Soap [Lin. Sapon. Mol, Co.] Tinctura Saponis  Viridis Composita

There is no change in this preparation which was formerly classed as compound  tincture of green soap. It contains soft soap, oil of cade, and alcohol.

LINIMENTUM SINAPIS COMPOSITUM. N.F.
Compound Liniment of Mustard [Lin.Sinap. Co.]

This preparation contains 3 per cent. of volatile oil of mustard, with  fluidextract of mezereum, camphor, castor oil, and alcohol. It is an active  rubefacient.

LINIMENTUM TEREBINTHINAE. N.F.
Turpentine Liniment [Lin. Terebinth.] Kentish Ointment.

This differs materially from the Linimentum Terebinthinae of the Br. (see  Part I). It is used as a stimulating application to burns and ulcers.

LINIMENTUM TEREBINTHINAE ACETICUM. N.F.
Acetic Turpentine Liniment [Lin.Terebinth. Acet.]

Linimentum Album; Stokes' Liniment; St. John Long's Liniment.
This liniment contains 40 per cent. of oil of turpentine, fresh egg, oil of lemon, acetic acid and rose water. It is a powerful counter-irritant.

LIQUOR ALUMINI ACETATIS. N.F.
Solution of Aluminum Acetate [Liq. Alum. Acet.] Liquor Burowii. Burow,s  Solution.

An aqueous solution containing not less than 4.5 and not more than 5.5 Gm. of neutral aluminum acetate [AI (C2H3O2) 3 = 204.10] in each 100 cc. N.F. It is made by  the reactions between lead acetate and aluminum sulphate in aqueous solution. A  process of assay is also given in the text. It should be noted that this differs  from the solution of aluminum acetate' of the N. F. III which is now known as  the solution of the subacetate. It is astringent and antiseptic.

LIQUOR ALUMINI SUBACETATIS. N.F.
Solution of Aluminum Subacetate [Liq. Alum. Subacet.]

An aqueous solution containing not less than 7.5 Gm. and not more than 8 Gm.  of basic aluminum acetate [AI ( C2H2O2) 2OH = 162.08] in each 100 cc. N.F. It is made  from aluminum sulphate, acetic acid, precipitated calcium carbonate and water.  An assay process is also given in the text. This preparation corresponds closely  to the Liquor Alumini Acetici of the German Pharmacopeia. It is an active  germicide, as well as astringent, and is used both as a gargle and as a surgical  dressing. It should generally be diluted with from 4 to 8 parts of water.

LIQUOR ANTISEPTICUS. N.F.
Antiseptic Solution [Liq. Antlsept.]

This is a hydro-alcoholic solution containing 2.5 per cent. of boric acid  with traces of thymol, eucalyptol, menthol and methyl salicylate. While it possesses feeble  antiseptic properties, it is chiefly useful to flavor mouth-washes.

LIQUOR AROMATICUS ALKALINUS. N.F.
Alkaline Aromatic Solution [Liq. Aromat. Alk.] Liquor Antisepticus Alkalinus,  N.F. IV.

This solution contains 2 per cent. each of sodium borate and potassium  bicarbonate with small amounts of thymol, eucalyptol and methyl salicylate and  is sweetened with glycerin and colored with cudbear.

LIQUOR AURI ET ARSENI BROMIDI. N.F.
Solution of Gold and Arsenic Bromide [Liq. Aur. et Arsen. Brom.]

This is a reddish brown solution resulting from the interaction between  arsenic trioxide, bromauric acid and bromine. It was at one time lauded as a remedy for  diabetes but probably owes any value it may possess chiefly to the arsenic in  it.
The dose is from two to five minims ( 0.12 - 0.3 cc. )

LIQUOR BISMUTHI. N.F.
Solution of Bismuth [Liq. Bism.]

This solution is made from glycerite of bismuth, alcohol, and distilled  water. About 3 grains of bismuth and sodium tartrate are represented in 1  fluidrachm of the finished solution. It is used as an intestinal astringent, but  does not possess the therapeutic virtues of the insoluble bismuth salts.
The dose is one fluidrachm ( 4 cc. )

LIQUOR CALCIS SULPHURATA. N.F.
Solution of Sulphurated Lime [Liq. Calc. Sulphurat.]

Solution of Oxysulphuret of Calcium; Vleminckx' solution. Vleminckx'  Lotion
Thjs solution is made by boiling together lime, sublimed sulphur and water.  It is used as an external application in skin diseases.

LIQUOR CARMINI. N.F.
Solution of Carmine [Liq. Carmin.]

This solution is made from carmine, ammonia water, glycerin and water. It is  used as a red coloring solution.

LIQUOR CHLORI COMPOSITUS. N.F.
Compound Solution of Chlorine [Liq.Chlor. Co.] Chlorine Water.

This is an aqueous solution containing, when freshly made, a mixture of  chlorine and chlorine oxides equivalent to about 0.35 Gm. of available chlorine  in each one hundred cc. N.F. It is made by reacting upon potassium chlorate with  hydrochloric acid and then dissolving the products of the reaction in cold  distilled water; this is practically identical with the U. S. P. VIII process.  It is used as an intestinal antiseptic.
The dose is one fluidrachm ( 4 cc. )

LIQUOR COCCI. N.F.
Liquor Coccineus, N.F. III Cochineal Color [Liq. Cocci]

This solution is made from cochineal, potassium carbonate, alum, potassium  bitartrate, alcohol, glycerin, and water. Like the solution of carmine, used to  color preparations red.

LIQUOR FERRI ALBUMINATI. N.F.
Solution of Albuminized Iron [Liq. Ferr. Albumin.]

Solution of Albuminate of Iron; Solution of Ferric Albuminate.
The formula for this preparation has been materially altered. It is now made  by dissolving albuminized iron ( see Ferri Albuminatum, Part I ) in an aromatic vehicle. It  is a clear yellowish brown liquid, containing 5 per cent. of albuminized iron,  or about a 2/5th of a grain of metallic iron in the form of albuminate, in 1  fluidrachm of the finished solution.
The dose is from two to four fluidrachms (8 -15 cc.)

LIQUOR FERRI CITRATIS. N.F.
Solution of Ferric Citrate [Liq. Ferr. Cit.]

This is an aqueous solution containing ferric citrate corresponding to not  less than 8.75 Gm of metallic iron (Fe) in each 100 cc. N.F. It is a dark  reddish-brown liquid with an acid reaction. It is made from solution of ferric sulphate, citric acid, ammonia  water, and water; A process of assay is given in the text.
The dose is ten minims ( 0.6 cc. )

LIQUOR FERRI PEPTONATI. N.F.
Solution of Peptonized Iron [Liq. Ferr. Pepton.]

It is made from pepsin, fresh egg albumen, hydrochloric acid, solution of  ferric oxychloride, alcohol, and sodium citrate made up into a pleasantly flavored preparation  with oil of orange, acetic ether, and vanillin, using glycerin, syrup and  distilled water. It contains 1.75 per cent of peptonized iron, equivalent to  about 2/5 of grain of metallic iron, in I fluidrachm of the finished  solution.
The dose is from two to four fluidrachms (8 -15 cc.)

LIQUOR FERRI PEPTONATI ET MANGANI. N.F.
Solution of Peptonized Iron and Manganese [Liq. Ferr. Pepton. et  ,Mangan.]
Solution of Iron Peptonate and Manganese.

This preparation is made from the same ingredients and In a similar manner to  the foregoing preparation with the addition of soluble manganese citrate.
The dose is two fluidrachms ( 8 cc. )

LIQUOR. FERRI SALICYLATIS. N.F.
Solution of Ferric Salicylate [Liq. Ferr. Salicyl. Salicylated Mixture of  Iron]

This preparation contains sodium salicylate, tincture of ferric citro-chloride, ammonium  carbonate, citric acid, methyl salicylate, glycerin, and distilled water.  Each fluidrachm is equivalent to about 7.5 grains of sodium salicylate and 7.5  minims of tincture of ferric citro-chloride. It has been recommended for cases  of chronic rheumatism complicated with anemia.
The dose is from one to two fluidrachms ( 4 - 8 cc )

LIQUOR FERRI SUBSULPHATIS. N.F.
Solution of Ferric Subsulphate [Liq. Ferr. Subsulph.]
Monsel's Solution; Solution of Baeic Ferric Sulphate.

This is an aqueous solution containing basic ferric sulphate corresponding to  not less than 20 Gm. and not more than 22 Gm. of Fe in each 100 cc. It is essentially  similar to the preparation formerly recognized: by the U.S. IX, although the  proportion of ingredients used in its manufacture is somewhat different. The  ferrous sulphate is partially oxidized to the ferric condition by boiling with  nitric acid, but the amount of sulphuric acid being insufficient to form a  normal sulphate, the resulting salt has the approximate composition,  5Fe2(SO4)3.Fe2(OH) 6. It forms a reddish-brown acid liquid. It is a valuable  astringent and styptic.
The dose is from one to three minims ( 0.06 - 0.20 cc.)

LIQUOR. HYDRASTINAE COMPOSITUS. N.F.
Compound Solution of Hydrastine [Liq. Hydrastin. Co.] Colorless Hydrastine  Solution.

This preparation contains 0.3 per cent. each of the chlorides of hydrastine,  aluminum, calcium and magnesium with 0.1 per cent. of potassium chloride in  solution ill glycerin and water. It owes its activity chiefly to the  hydrastine.
The dose is from one to two fluidrachms ( 4 - 8 cc.)

LIQUOR. HYPOPHOSPHITUM COMPOSITUS. N.F.
Compound Solution of Hypophosphites [Liq. Hypophos. Co.]

This solution represents in each fluidrachm 1fs grain quinine, 1-250th of a  grain of strychnine and 1/4 grain. of iron, with calcium, potassium, sodium, and  manganese hypophosphites.
The dose is one to four tiuidrachms (4-15 cc.)

LIQUOR IODI ET ZINCI PHENOLSULPHONATIS. N.F.
Solution of Iodine and Zinc Phenolsulphonate. [Liq. lodi et Phenolsul.]  Pyorrhea Astringent.

This contains 15 Gm. each of zinc phenolsulphonate and potassium iodide with  20 Gm. of iodine in 100 cc. This solution should be recently prepared when dispensed.  N.F. It is used locally.

LIQUOR IODI PHENOLATUS. N. F. Liquor
lodi Carbolatus, N.F. III Phenolated Solution of Iodine [Liq.lod.  Phenol.]
Carbolized Solution of Iodine; Boulton's Solution; French Mixture.

This solution is made from compound solution of iodine, liquefied phenol,  glycerin, and water. The direction to expose it to sunlight until it is  decolorized destroys much of its therapeutic value. It represents about 0.5 per  cent. of phenol. It is used externally.

LIQUOR PANCREATINI. N.F.
Solution of Pancreatin [Liq. Pancreat.] Liquor Pancreaticus; Pancreatic  Solution.

This solution is made from pancreatin, sodium bicarbonate, glycerin, compound  spirit of cardamom. alcohol, purified talc and water. .About 1 grain of  pancreatin is represented in 1 fluidrachm of the finished solution. It is used  as a digestive.
The dose is one to four fluidrachms ( 4 -15 cc.)

LIQUOR PEPSINI. N.F.
Solution of Pepsin [Liq. Pepsin.]

l'his solution contains glycerite of pepsin, hydrochloric acid, glycerin and  water. One cc. of this solution will digest 10 Gm. of egg albumen, carrying out the test  according to the details of the U. S. P. X assay under Pepsinum. N.F. It is too  weak to be of therapeutic value.
The dose is from two to four fluidrachms ( 8 -15 cc.)

LIQUOR PEPSINI ANTISEPTICUS. N.F.
Antiseptic Solution of Pepsin [Liq. Pepsin. Antisept.]

This solution represents 5 per cent. of pepsin with traces of menthol,  eucalyptol and methyl salicylate. It is much stronger than the preceding; One-tenth cc. of this  solution will digest 10 Gm. of egg albumen when carrying out the test according  to the details of the U.S.P. X assay under Pepsinum. N.F. It is used externally  in the treatment of old sores to assist their healing.

LIQUOR PEPSINI AROMATICUS. N. F.
Aromatic Solution of Pepsin [Liq. Pepsin. Arom.]

This solution of pepsin is flavored with cinnamon, pimenta and clove. .About  1 grain of pepsin is represented in 1 fluidrachm of finished solution. It is  used as a digestive. One-fourth cc. of the solution digests 10 Gm. of egg  albumen, carrying out the test according to the details of the U.S.P. under Pepsinum.  N.F.
The dose is from two to: four fluidraahms, ( 8 -15 cc.)

LIQUOR PHOSPHATUM ACIDUS. N.F.
Acid Solution of Phosphates [Liq. Phos. Acid. Solution of Acid  Phosphates]

This is now made by dissolving calcium and magnesium carbonate in phosphoric  acid and water. It represents 71!4 grains of dibasic calcium phosphate in each  fluidrachm.
The dose is one fluidrachm ( 4 cc.)

LIQUOR PHOSPHATUM COMPOSITUS. N.F.
Compound Solution of Phosphates [Liq. Phos. Co.]

This is a polypharmacal preparation containing the phosphates of ammonium,  calcium, iron, potassium, and sodium held in aqueous solution by the use of  glycerin and citric acid. It is used for making the compound syrup of  phosphates.

LIQUOR PHOSPHORI. N.F.
Solution of Phosphorus [Liq. Phosphor.] Thompson's Solution of  Phosphorus.

This solution is made from phosphorus, dehydrated alcohol, spirit of  peppermint and glycerin. It represents 0.07 per cent. of phosphorus. It is used  as a tonic and stimulant in nervous diseases.
The dose is from ten to fifteen minims ( 0.6 -1.0 cc.)

LIQUOR PICIS CARBONIS. N.F.
Coal Tar Solution [Liq. Pic. Carbon.] Liquor Carbonis Detergens.

This preparation, sometimes known by the name of Liquor Carbonis Detergens,  is made by digesting 200 Gm. of coal tar and 100 Gm. of soap bark with enough  alcohol to make 1000 cc. It is used externally in skin diseases.

LIQUOR PLUMBI SUBACETATIS DILUTUS. N.F.
Diluted Solution of Lead Subacetate. [Liq. Plumb. Subacet. Dil.] Lead  Water.

This is a mixture of 35 parts of solution of lead subacetate with 965 parts  of water. It is too weak to be of any real value. It is used locally.

LIQUOR POTASSII IODIDI. N. F.
Solution of Potassium Iodide [Liq. Pot. Iod.] Saturated Solution of Potassium  Iodide.

An aqueous solution containing not less than 97 Gm. and not more than 103 Gm.  of KI (166.02) in each 100 cc. N.F.
The dose is from five to ten minims ( 0.3 - 6 cc.) or more.

LIQUOR PROCAINAE HYDROCHLORIDI.
Solution of Procaine Hydrochloride [Liq. Procain Hydroch.] Dental Anesthetic  Solution.

This solution contains 2 Gm. of procaine hydrochloride in each 100 cc. of 0.9  per cent. sodium chloride solution, a little thymol being present as a  preservative. The N.F. has a note that, to each cc. of this solution add 9,95  cc. of solution of Epinephrine Hydrochloride just before employing  hypodermically but such a memorandum seems to us an infringement on the prerogatives of the physician.

LIQUOR SODAE ET MENTHAE. N.F.
Solution of Soda and Mint [Liq. Sod. et Menth] Mistura Sodle et Menthle; Soda  Mint.

This preparation contains sodium bicarbonate, aromatic spirit of ammonia and  spearmint or peppermint water. Each fluidrachm contains 3 grains of the bicarbonate and  0.6 minim of aromatic spirit of ammonia. It is used as an antacid and  carminative.
The dose is from two to four fluidrachms ( 8 -15 cc.)

LIQUOR SODII ARSENATIS. N.F.
Solution of Sodium Arsenate [Liq. Sod. Arsenat.]

An aqueous solution containing not less than 0.975 Gm. and not more than  1.025 Gm. of Na2 HA sO4 (185.97) in each 100 cc. N.F. This is the same as the  solution formerly official in the U.S. IX.
The dose is from three to eight minims ( 0.2 - 0.5 cc )

LIQUOR SODII ARSENATIS, PEARSONII. N.F.
Pearson's Solution of Sodium Arsenate [Liq. Sod. Arsen. Pearson.]
Liquor Arsenicalis Pearsonii.

This preparation should not be confounded with the preceding Liquor Sodii  Arsenatis, which is ten times stronger than Pearson's solution. It contains  about 1/6th per cent. of crystallized sodium arsenate, or about 10 per cent. of  anhydrous sodium arsenate. Whenever it is prescribed or dispensed, the name "  Pearson " should be specified, to avoid serious mistakes.
The dose is from twenty to thirty minims ( 1 - 2 cc.)

LIQUOR. SODII BORATIS COMPOSITUS. N.F.
Compound Solution of Sodium Borate [Liq. Sod. Bor. Co.] Dobell,s  Solution.

This solution contains about 1.5 per cent. each of sodium borate and sodium  bicarbonate and 0.3 per cent. of phenol, with glycerin and water. It is widely  need as a cleansing wash in inflammations of the nose and pharynx.

LIQUOR SODII CITRATIS. N.F.
Solution of Sodium Citrate [Liq. Sod. Cit.] Mistura Sodii Citratis; Potio  Rivierii

This solution is made with 2 per cent. of citric acid and 2.5 per cent. of  sodium bicarbonate in distilled water. It should be freshly prepared. The amount  of sodium citrate formed, about 1.5 grains for each fluidrachm, is so small that  the solution has scarcely any effect beyond that of a mildly saline  drink.
The dose is officially given as two fluidrachms (8 cc.) but it would  require upwards of an ounce to exercise any therapeutic effect.

LIQUOR SODII PHOSPHATIS COMPOSITUS. N.F.
Compound Solution of Sodium Phosphate [Liq. Sod. Phos. Co.]

This preparation contains sodium phosphate crystals, citric acid, glycerin,  and distilled water. Each cc. l:epresents 1 gramme of crystallized sodium  phosphate. It is used as: a laxative.
The dose is from, one to two fluidrachms ( 4 - 8 cc.).

LOTIO ALBA VETERINARIA. N.F.
Veterinary White Lotion [Lot. Alb. Vet.]

This preparation is the result of the reaction between zinc sulphate (23  Gm.), and lead acetate (30 Gm. in 1000 cc. of water.

LOTIO AMMONIACALIS CAMPHORATA.
N. F. Aqua Sedativa, N. F. III Ammoniated Camphor Wash [Lot. Ammon.  Camph.]
Aqua Sedativa; Sedative Water; Eau Sedative de Raspail.

This is an aqueous solution containing 6 per cent. each of sodium chloride  and ammonia water, with 10 per cent. spirit of camphor.

LOTIO CALAMINAE. N.F.
Calamine Lotion [Lot. Calam.]

This preparation contains 8 Gm. each of prepared calamine and zinc oxide in  100 cc. of lime water with a little glycerin.

LOTIO CALAMINAE COMPOSITUM. N.F.
Compound Calamine Lotion [Lot. Calam. Co.]

This is a 10 per cent. solution of liquefied phenol in calamine lotion.

LOTIO FLAVA. N.F.
Yellow Lotion [Lot. Flav.] Yellow Wash; Aqua Phagedrenica Flava.

It is made with 0.3 per cent. of corrosive mercuric chloride in lime water  slightly diluted with water. The mercury is present as a yellow hydroxide in the finished  preparation. It is used externally in skin diseases. It is slightly weaker than  the corresponding preparation of the Br. (See Lotio Hydraruyri Flava, Part  I.)

LOTIO NIGRA. N.F.
Black Lotion [Lot. Nigr.] Black Wash; AquaPhagedmnica Nigra.

It is made with 0.875 per cent. (formerly 0.75 per cent. ) of mild mercurous  chloride in lime water slightly diluted with water. The mercury is largely present as a black  suboxide. It is used externally in skin diseases. It exceeds in strength the  similar Br. preparation, (see Lotio Hydrarqyri Nigra, Part I)

LOTIO PLUMBI ET OPII. N.F.
Lotion of Lead and Opium [Lot. Plumb. et Opii.] Lead and Opium Wash.

It contains, in each 100 cc. 1.75 grammes of lead acetate and 3.5 grammes of  tincture of opium. It is used as an astringent and sedative external  application.
