A to D

Edited by

The National Formulary, published  by the American Pharmaceutical Association, was originally planned as a convenience for druggists by providing them with standardized.formulas. for preparations called for either by the laity or by physicians. Under the Federal law of 1906 it became a legal standard for medicines in the United States. This change in its status has led to some modification in the character of the N.F. it has been divided in two parts: first a collection of formulas of the same type as originally composed the book, and second a description of such crude drugs employed in these formulas as are not recognized by the Pharmacopoeia, with tests for their quality. This second part of the N.F. being essentially of the same category as the Pharmacopeia descriptions, has been included in Part 1 of the present work. The Galenicals of the N, F., being of less importance, are given only in abstract in this place.

It is a golden yellow, fuming liquid with a chlorinous odor; it becomes lighter in color when kept, but only the golden fluid should be dispensed. The N. F. directs that unless it immediately liberates iodine from aqeous solution of potassium iodide it should not be dispensed. For description of chemical and therapeutic properties see Acidum Nitrohydrochloricum, Part I.

AMPULLAE
Ampules

These are small, hermetically sealed containers which are filled with a sterile solution of a medicinal agent intended for hypodermic injection. In our opinion the name is an unfortunate one as it applies to the container rather than the contents; the British name, for the corresponding preparation, of injectiones Hypodermicoe seems more appropriate.

The amount of solution in each is a little more than 1 cc. (except one which is 2 cc.) this is to allow for the small amount of liquid which inevitably remains in the container when the physician fill's his syringe from it.
