ELIXIR. ALETRIDIS COMPOSITUM. N.F.
Compound Elixir of Aletris [Elix. Aletrid. Co.]
This contains, in each fluidrachm, 3.75
minims of the fluid extracts of aletris, mitchella, helonias and
caulophyllum with 1% minims of viburnum Opulus. As none of these drugs are
of much value and as the quantities present are ridiculously minute it is
evident that the elixir is of no great use. It is intended for
dysmenorrhea.
Dose, one to four fluidrachms (
4-15 cc. )
ELIXIR. AMMONII BROMIDI. N.F.
Elixir of Ammonium Bromide [Elix. Ammon. Brom.]

containing oil of bitter almond, vanillin and orange flower water as
the essential ingredients.

as the flavoring constituents.
ELIXIR. BISMUTHI. N.F.
Elixir of Bismuth [Elix. Bismuth.]
This elixir is made from glycerite of bismuth, glycerin, distilled water,
and aromatic elixir, and each teaspoonful represents the equivalent of 3
grains (0.19 Gm.) of bismuth sodium tartrate. This is used as an
intestinal astringent, but does not possess the therapeutic virtues of the
insoluble bismuth salts.
The dose is one
fluidrachm ( 4 cc. )
ELIXIR. BR.OMIDORUM QUINQUE. N.F.
Elixir of Five Bromides [Elix. Bromid. Qulnq.]
What the advantage is of having five different salts of hydrobromic acid
in combination, is not very obvious; they are sodium, potassium, calcium,
lithium and ammonium bromides. The total quantity of bromide present is 15
grains in each fluidrachm.
Dose, one fluidrachm ( 4 cc. )
ELIXIR BROMIDORUM TRIUM. N.F.
Elixir of Three Bromides [Elix. Tri. Brom.]

Pot. Acet.]
Each fluidrachm of this represents 8.5 minims of fluid extract of buchu,
half that quantity of juniper and about 3 grains of potassium acetate. The
proportion of active ingredients is so small that one is forced to the
conclusion that the most potent substance, in this elixir, is the alcohol.
Dose, one to four fluidrachms
(4-15 cc.)
ELIXIR CALCII ET SODII GLYCEROPHOS.PHATUM.
N.F.
Elixir of Calcium and Sodium Glycerophosphates.

ELIXIR CARNIS ET FERRI. N.F.
Elixir of Beef and Iron [Elix. Carn. et Ferr.] Replacing Vinum Carnis et
Ferri, N.F 4.
There is little material difference between this and the formerly official
wine, except in flavor. It contains about 2 grains of beef extract and
half a grain of iron and ammonium citrate in each fluidrachm, the
menstruum being 20 per cent. of alcohol. The old preparation was
enormously abused; let us hope the change in flavor will lessen its
popularity as a tipple.
Dose, two to six fluidrachms (
8-23 cc. )
ELIXIR CASCARAE SAGRADAE. N.F.
Elixir Rhamni Purshianae, N.F. 3 Elixir of Cascara Sa&,rada [Elix.

An advantageous change in the formula of this is the substitution of
aqueous elixir of glycyrrhiza in the place of aromatic elixir. It is a
mixture of equal parts of aromatic fluid extract of cascara and elixir of
glycyrrhiza.
Dose is one-half to one
fluidrachm ( 2-4 cc. )

be freshly prepared when needed. The following flavoring agents are
suggested as being acceptable for cod liver oil, the choice being left. to
the prescriber:
