This contains, in each fluidrachm, 3.75 minims of the fluid extracts of aletris, mitchella, helonias and caulophyllum with 1% minims of viburnum Opulus. As none of these drugs are of much value and as the quantities present are ridiculously minute it is evident that the elixir is of no great use. It is intended for dysmenorrhea.

ELIXIR. BISMUTHI. N.F.
Elixir of Bismuth [Elix. Bismuth.]

This elixir is made from glycerite of bismuth, glycerin, distilled water, and aromatic elixir, and each teaspoonful represents the equivalent of 3 grains (0.19 Gm.) of bismuth sodium tartrate. This is used as an intestinal astringent, but does not possess the therapeutic virtues of the insoluble bismuth salts.
The dose is one fluidrachm ( 4 cc. )

ELIXIR. BR.OMIDORUM QUINQUE. N.F.
Elixir of Five Bromides [Elix. Bromid. Qulnq.]

What the advantage is of having five different salts of hydrobromic acid in combination, is not very obvious; they are sodium, potassium, calcium, lithium and ammonium bromides. The total quantity of bromide present is 15 grains in each fluidrachm.

Each fluidrachm of this represents 8.5 minims of fluid extract of buchu, half that quantity of juniper and about 3 grains of potassium acetate. The proportion of active ingredients is so small that one is forced to the conclusion that the most potent substance, in this elixir, is the alcohol.

ELIXIR CARNIS ET FERRI. N.F.
Elixir of Beef and Iron [Elix. Carn. et Ferr.] Replacing Vinum Carnis et Ferri, N.F 4.

There is little material difference between this and the formerly official wine, except in flavor. It contains about 2 grains of beef extract and half a grain of iron and ammonium citrate in each fluidrachm, the menstruum being 20 per cent. of alcohol. The old preparation was enormously abused; let us hope the change in flavor will lessen its popularity as a tipple.
