Editors note: Some of the fluid extracts are prepared by using the so called aqueous  menstruum. This method is suspect because of the physical characteristics of the  menstruum, which had a deleterious effect  on the plant constituents.

The National Formulary, published by the American Pharmaceutical Association,  was originally planned as a convenience for druggists by providing them with standardized formulas for preparations called for either by the laity or by physicians. Under the Federal law of 1906 it became a legal standard for  medicines in the United States. This change in its status has led to some  modification in the character of the N.F, it has been divided in two parts:  first a collection of formulas of the same type as originally composed the book, and second a description of such crude drugs employed in these formulas as are  not recognized by the Pharmacopoeia, which tests..their quality. This second  part of the N.F. being essentially of the same category as the Pharmacopeia  descriptions, has been included in Part 1 of the present work. The Galenicals of  the N, F., being of less importance, are given only in abstract in this place. 

EXTRACTUM TARAXACI. N.F.
Extract of Taraxacum [Ext. Tarax.]
This preparation is the same as that formerly recognized by the U.S. IX under  the same title.
The dose is from fifteen to sixty grains ( 1 - 4 Gm.)

FERRI OXIDUM SACCHARATUM. N.F.
Saccharated Ferric Oxide [Ferr. Oxid. Sacch.]
Soluble Ferric Oxide; Ferrum Oxydatum Saccharatum; Eisenzucker, G
Saccharated ferric oxide contains,the equivalent of not less than 2.8 per  cent of Fe. In the preparation of this product, freshly precipitated ferrlc  hydroxide is dissolved in a heavy sugar syrup by the addition of a small  quantity of sodium hydroxide. This solution is then evaporated on a water  bath.and enough sugar added to bring it to the desired weight. An assay process  is given.
Dose, thirty grains ( 2 gm. )

FLUIDEXTRACTA. N.F. Fluidextracts.
The fluidextracts of the N.F like those of the U.S.P. are mostly made  according to one of four type processes; These, processes are essentially the  same as those of the
U. S. P. (see Part I). Fluidextracts should be stored in amber-colored  bottles protected from, sunlight and extremes of temperature.

FLUIDEXTRACTUM ACONITI. N.F.
Fluidextract of Aconite [Fldext. Aconit.]
This is made with a menstruum of three volumes of alcohol and one volume of  water. When assayed biologically, the minimum lethal dose of Fluidextract of  Aconite should be not greater than 0.00004 cc. for each Gm. of body weight of  guinea plg. N.F. For description of the method of assay see under Aconitum, Part  I.
The use of this preparation is not to be recommeded because it is so highly  toxic that slight errors in dosage or manipulation may have serious  effects.
The dose is one minim ( 0.06 cc;)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM ADONIDIS, N.F.
Fluidextract of Adonis [Fldext. Adonid.]
Prepared by using three volumes of alcohol and one volume of water as the  menstruum.
The dose is two to five minims (0.12-0.30 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM ALETRIDIS. N. F.
Fluidextract of Aletris [Fldext. Aletrid.]
Prepared by using diluted alcohol as the menstruum.
The dose is thirty to sixty minims (2-4 cc.).

FLUIDEXTRACTUM ANGELICAE RADICIS. N.F.
Fluidextract of Angelica Root [Fldext.Angel. Rad.]
Prepared by using 5 volumes of alcohol with one of water as the  menstruum.
The dose is thirty to sixty minims ( 2 - 4 cc. )

FLUIDEXTRACTUM APII FRUCTUS. N.F.
Fluidextract of Celery Fruit [Fldext. Apii Fruct.]
Prepared by using alcohol as the menstruum. In order to remove any separated  oil, after permitting the fluidextract to stand, filter it through an  alcohol-wetted filter, rejecting the final few cc. remaining on the filter with  the oil.
The dose is from twenty to sixty minims (1.3 - 4)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM APOCYNI. N.F. 
Fluidextract of Apocynum [Fldext. Apocyn.]
Prepared by using three volumes of water as menstruum I, and three volumes of  alcohol and two volumes of water as menstruum II. It may be assayed by the method  described under Digitalis (Part I). The increase in the proportion  of alcohol, over; that of the U. S. VIII, is an advantage. " CAUTION. It  has been stated that the absorption of apocynum in the gastro-intestinal tract  is uncertain and irregular. To avoid an accumulation of the drug or toxic  action, the physician should carefully guard the dosage and determine in each  case the tolerance of the patient." N.F.
The dose is from five to fifteen minims (0.3-1.0 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM ARALIA N.F.
Fluidextract of Aralia (Fldext. Arai)
Prepared by using two volumes of alcohol and one volume of water as the  menstruum. It is used as an alterative.
The dose is thirty minims ( 2 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM ARNICAE. N.F.
Fluidextractum Arnicae Florum, N. F. III Fluidextract of Arnica [Fldext.  Arnic.]
Prepared by using two volumes of alcohol with one of water as the  menstruum.
The dose is from one to three minims ( 0.06 - 0.2 cc. )

FLUIDEXTRACTUM ASCLEPIADIS. N.F.
Fluidextract of Asclepias [F1dext. Asclepiad.]
Prepared by using diluted alcohol as the menstruum. It is used as a  diaphoretic, emetic, and cathartic.
The dose: is from twenty to sixty minims ( 1.2 - 4.0 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM AVENAE SATIVAE. N.F.
Fluidextract of Avena Sativa [Fldext.Aven. Sativ.]
This is prepared with a menstruum consisting of two volumes of alcohol and  one of water.
The official dose is one fluidrachm ( 4 cc. ) but larger amounts can be  safely given.

FLUIDEXTRACTUM BAPTISIAE. N.F.
Fluidextract of Baptisia [Fldext. Baptis.]
Prepared by using three volumes of alcohol an. one volume of water as the  menstruum.
The dose is fifteen minims (I cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM BERBERIDIS. N.F.
Fluidextract of Berberis [Fldext. Berberid.]
Prepared by using diluted alcohol as the menstruum. It is used as an  astringent tonic and cathartic.
The dose is from ten to thirty minims (0.6 -2 cc.).

FLUIDEXTRACTUM BOLDI. N.F.
Fluidextract of Boldo [Fldext. Boldi]
Prepared by using alcohol as the menstruum. It Is used as an alterative and  tonic.
The dose is from five to eight minims (0.3 - 0.5 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM BUCHU COMPOSITUM. N.F.
Compound Fluidextract of Buchu [Fldext.Buchu Co.]
Prepared by using four volumes of alcohol and one volume of water as the  menstruum. Each fluidrachm represents 37. 5 grains of buchu and 7.5 grains each of cubeb, juniper and uva ursi.
The dose is from  thirty to sixty minims ( 2 - 4 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM CALENDULAE. N.F.
Fluidextract of Calendula [Fldext. Calend.]
Prepared by using two volumes of alcohol with one of water as the menstruum.
Dose, (official) fifteen minims ( 1 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM CALUMBAE. N.F.
Fluidextract of Calumba [Fldext. Calumb.]
Prepared by using one volume of glycerin, two volumes of alcohol, and one volume of water as menstruum.
The dose is from ten to thirty minims ( 0.6 -2.0 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM CASTANEAE. N. F.
Fluidextract of Chestnut Leaves [Fldext. Castan.]
Prepared by using boiling water as the menstruum and adding ten volumes of  glycerin and twenty volumes of alcohol being added as a preservative. It is used  as an astringent.
The dose is from thirty to sixty minims (2 - 4 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM CATARIAE. N.F.
Fluidextract of Catnep [Fldext. Catar.]
Prepared by using three volumes of alcohol and four volumes of water as the  menstruum.
The dose is from one-half to one fluidrachm (2 - 4 cc.)

FLUIDEXTR.ACTUM CAULOPHYLLI. N.F.
Fluidextract of Caulophyllum [Fldext. Caulophyl.]
Prepared by using three volumes of alcohol and one volume of water as the  menstruum.
The dose is from five to ten minims ( 0.3-0.6 cc. )

FLUIDEXTRACTUM CHIMAPHILAE. N.F.
Fluidextract of Chimaphila [Fldext. Chimaphil.]
Prepared by using diluted alcohol as the menstruum. It is used chiefly for  its effects on the mucous membrane of the bladder and urethra.
The dose is thirty to sixty minims ( 2 - 4 cc. )

FLUIDEXTR.ACTUM CHIONANTHI. N. F.
Fluidextract of Chionanthus [Fldext. Chionanth.]
Prepared by using three volumes of alcohol and one volume of water as the  menstruum.
The dose is thirty to sixty minims ( 2 - 4 cc. )

FLUIDEXTR.ACTUM CHIR.ATAE. N. F.
Fluidextract of Chirata (Fldext.Chirat.]
Prepared by using diluted alcohol as the menstruum. It is used as a tonic and  febrifuge.
The dose is from ten to twenty minims (0.6 -1.2 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM COCILLANAE. N.F.
Fluidextract of Cocillana [Fldext. Cocillan.]
Prepared by using three volumes of alcohol and one volume of water as the  menstruum.
The dose is from ten to twenty minims ( 0.6 -1.2 cc.)

FLUIDEXTR.ACTUM COFFEAE. N.F.
fluidextractum Coffeae Tostae, N.F. III Fluidextract of Coffee [Fldext. Coff.]
Prepared by using 65 cc. of glycerin, 250 cc. of alcohol, and 685 cc. of  water as menstruum 1. one volume of alcohol and three volumes of water as  menstruum II.
The dose is thirty to sixty minims ( 2 - 4 cc. )

FLUIDEXTRACTUM COLCHICI CORMI N.F.
Fluidextract of Colchicum Corm [Fldext. Colch.Corm.]
One hundred cc. of fluidextract of colchicum corm yields not less than 0.31  Gm. nor more than 0.39 Gm. of colchicine. N.F. Prepared by using a menstruum of  two volumes of alcohol and one volume of water. After assaying adjust the volume  of the finished product to conform with the required standard. An assay is  provided inthe text.
The dose is from two to eight minims (0.12-0.50 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM CONDURANGO. N.F.
Fluidextract of Condurango [Fldext.Condurango]
Prepared by using diluted alcohol as the menstruum. It is used as an  alterative and stomachic.
The dose is one fluidrachm ( 4 cc. )

FLUIDEXTRACTUM CONVALLARIAE RADICIS. N.F.
Fluidextract of Convallaria Root [Fldext.Conval. Rad.]
Prepared by using three volumes of alcohol and one volume of water as the  menstruum.
The dose is from five to ten minims (0.3-0.6 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM COPTIS. N. F.
Fluidextract of Coptis [Fldext. Copt.]
Prepared by using diluted alcohol as the menstruum.
The dose is thirty minims (2 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM CORNI. N. F.
Fluidextractum Cornus, N. F. III Fluidextract of Cornus (Fldext.  Corni]
Prepared by using 150 cc. of glycerin and 850 cc. of diluted alcohol as  menstruum I, and diluted alcohol as menstruum II.
The dose is from thirty to sixty minims ( 2 - 4 cc.)

Prepared by using three volumes of alcohol and one volume of water as the  menstruum.

Fluidextractum Turnerre, N. F. III Fluidextract of Damiana [Fldext.  Damian.]
Prepared by using three volumes of alcohol and one volume of water as the  menstruum. It is attributed, but probably erroneously so, with aphrodisiac  powers.
The dose is from one-half to one fluidrachm ( 2 - 4 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM DIGITALIS. N.F.
Fluidextract of Digitalis [Fldext. Digit.]
This is made with a menstruum consisting of five volumes of alcohol and one  of water. " When assayed biologically the minimal lethal dose should not be  greater than 0.0006 cc; of the Fluidextract, or the equivalent in Fluidextract  of 0.000,000,5 Gm. of ouabain for each Gm. of body weight of frog." The dose is from one-half to one and a half minims (0.03 - 0.10  cc.)

Prepared by using diluted alcohol as the menstruum.
The dose is one fluidrachm (4 cc.)

Prepared by using diluted alcohol as the menstruum.
The dose is from one-half to one fluidrachm (2 - 4 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM ECHINACEAE. N.F.
Fluidextract of Echinacea [Fldext. Echin.]
Prepared by using four volumes of alcohol and one volume of water as the  menstruum.
The dose is from ten to thirty minims (0.6 - 2.0 cc.)

FLUlDEXTRACTUM EUONYMI. N.F.
Fluidextract of Euonymus [Fldext.Euonym.]
Prepared by using diluted alcohol and once volume of water as the  menstruum.
The dose is eight minims ( 0.5 cc. )
CAUTION. - It has been stated that the absorption of euonymus in the  gastro-intestinal tract is uncertain and irregular. To avoid possible toxic or  cumulative action of the drug, the physician should carefully determine in each  case the tolerance of the patient and regulate the dosage accordingly  .N.F.

FLUIDEXTRACTUM EUPHORBIIE. N.F.
Fluidextract of Euphorbia [Fldext. Euphorb. Pilul.]
Prepared by using diluted alcohol as the menstruum. The change of name  (formerly it was Fluidextractum Euphorbioe Piluliferre ) is, in our opinion,  unfortunate as other species of Euphorbia with very different medicinal  properties are used in medicine.
The dose is thirty minims (2 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM FRANGULAE.. N.F.
Fluidextract of Frangula [Fldexi. Frang.]
In this preparation water is used ae the extracting menstruum but 25 per  cent. of alcohol is added to the finished fluidextract as a preservative.
The dose is from ten to twenty minims (0.6 -1.2 cc.)

This is made with a menstruum of three volumes of alcohol and one volume of  water.
The dose is from thirty to sixty minims ( 2 - 4 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM GUARANAE N. F.
Fluidextract of Guarana (Fldext. Guaran.]
One hundred cc. of Fluidextract of Guarana yields not less than 3.6 Gm. and  not more than 4.4 Gm. of anhydrous caffeine." N. F. It is made with a menstruum  of three volumes of alcohol with one of water.
The dose is from thirty to sixty minims ( 2 - 4 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM HAMAMELIDIS FOLlORUM. N.F.
Fluidextract of Hamamelis Leaves [Fldext. Hamamel. Fol.]
Prepared by using one volume of glycerin, three volumes of alcohol, and five  volumes of water as menstruum I, and one volume of alcohol and two volumes of  water as menstruum II.
The dose is from fifteen to thirty minims (1 - 2 cc. )

FLUIDEXTRACTUM HELONIADIS. N.F.
Fluidextract of Helonias [Fldext. Helon.]
Prepared by using diluted alcohol as the menstruum.

FLUIDEXTRACTUM HUMULI. N.F.
Fluidextract of Hops [ Fldext. Humul.]
Prepared by using five volumes of alcohol and three volumes of water as the  menstruum. It is used as a nerve sedative.
The dose is from one-half to one fluidrachm ( 2 - 4 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM HYDRANGEA. N.F.
Fluidextract of Hydrangea [Fldext. Hydrang.]
Prepared by using three volumes of alcohol and two volumes of water as the  menstruum.
The dose is thirty minims (2 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM IRIDIS VERSICOLORIS. N.F.
Fluidextract of Blue Flag [ Fldext. Iris Vers. Fluidextractum Iridis, N.F.  III ]
Prepared by using alcohol as the menstruum.
The dose is from ten to thirty minims (0.6 - 2 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM JALAPAE N.F.
Fluidextract of Jalap .[Fldext. Jalap.]
Prepared by mixing the drug with clean sand and using alcohol as the  menstruum. One hundred cc. of Fluidextract of Jalap yields not less than 6.5 Gm.  and not more than 7.5 Gm. of the resin of Jalap. N.F.
The dose is, from ten to twenty minims [0.6-1.8 cc.]

FLUIDEXTRACTUM JUGLANDIS. N.F.
Fluidextract of Juglans [Fldext. Jugland.]
Prepared by using 100 cc. of glycerin, 500 cc. of alcohol and 400 cc. of  water as menstruum and dIluted alcohol as menstruum II. It is used as a  cathartic.
The dose is from one.half to one fluidrachm ( 2 - 4 cc. )

FLUIDEXTRACTUM JUNIPERI. N.F.
Fluidextract of Juniper Berries [Fldext.Junip.]
Prepared by using four volumes of alcohol with one of water as the menstruum:  It is used as a diuretic.
The dose is one fluidrachm ( 4 cc. )

FLUIDEXTRACTUM KARVAE N.F.
Fluidextract of Kava [Fldext.Kav.]
Prepared by using three volumes of alcohol and two volumes of water as the  menstruum.
The dose is fifteen minims ( 1 cc. )

FLUIDEXTRACTUM KOLAE. N.F.
Fluidextract of Kola [Fldext. Kol. Fluidextractum Sterculiae, N. F.  III]
Prepared by using two volumes of alcohol and one volume of water as the  menstruum. One hundred cc. of Fluidextract of Kola yields not less than 0.85 Gm.  and not more than 1.15 Gm. of caffeine N.F.
The dose is one fluidrachm ( 4cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM KRAMERIAE N.F.
Fluidextract of Krameria [Fldext. Kramer.]
Prepared by using one volume of glycerin, flve volumes of alcohol and four  volumes of water as menstruum I, and diluted alcohol as menstruum 11.
The dose is from fifteen to forty-five minims (1 - 3 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM LAPPAE. N.F.
Fluidextract of Lappa [ Fldext. Lapp.]
Prepared by using diluted a-lcohol as the menstruum.
The dose is from thirty to sixty minims (2 - 4 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM LEPTANDRAE. N.F.
Fluidextract of Leptandra [Fldext. Leptand.]
Prepared by using three volumes of alcohol and one volume of water as the  menstruum.
The dose is from fifteen to thirty minims (1 - 2 cc )

FLUIDEXTRACTUM LOBELIAE. N.F.
Fluidextract of Lobelia [Fldext. Lobel.]
This is prepared with; a mixture of 50 cc. of acetic acid, 500 cc. of Alcohol  and 450 cc, of water as menstruum I and diluted alcohol as menstruum II.
The dose is one to two minims ( 0.06 - 0.12 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM LUPULINI. N.F.
Fluidextract of Lupulin [Fldext. Lupulin.]
It is made with alcohol as the menstruum.
The dose is from five to ten minims (0.3 - 0.6 cc:)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM MANACAE. N.F.
Fluidextract of Manaca [Fldext. Manac.]
This is prepared with a mixture of three volumes of alcohol and one of water  as the menstruum.
The dose is from ten to thirty minims ( 0.6 - 1.0 cc )

FLUIDEXTRACTUM MATICO. N.F.
Fluidextract of Matico [Fldext. Matic.]
Prepared by using three volumes of alcohol and one volume of water, as  directed by the U.S.P.VIII, as the menstruum.
The dose is one fluidrachm (4 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM MEZEREI. N.F.
Fluidextract of Mezereum [Fldext. Mezer.]
Prepared by using three volumes of alcohol and one volume of water as the  menstruum. It is used as a rubefacient.

FLUIDEXTRACTUM MITCHELLAE. N. F.
Fluidextract of Mitchella [Fldext. Mitchel.]
This is prepared with diluted alcohol as the menstruum.
The dose is from thirty to sixty minims (2 - 4 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM NUCIS VOMICA. N.F.
Fluidextract of Nux Vomica [Fldext. Nuc. Vom.]
One hundred cc. of Fluidextract of Nux Vomica yields not less than 2.37 Gm.  and not more than 2.63Gm. of the alkaloids of Nux Vomica." N.F. It is prepared  with a menstruum of three volumes of alcohol with one of water.
The dose is from one to two minims ( 0.06 - 0.12 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM PAREIRAE. N. F.
Fluidextract of Pareira [Fldext. Pareir.]
Prepared by using diluted alcohol as the menstruum.
The dose is from thirty to sixty minims (1 - 2 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM PHYTOLACCAE. N.F. 
Fluidextract of Phytolacca [Fldext. Phytolac.]
Prepared by using diluted alcohol, as the menstruum.
The dose is from  ten to thirty minims ( 0.6 -2.0 cc. ) as an emetic, and one to five minims
(0.06 - 0.30 cc.) as an alterative.

FLUIDEXTRACTUM PRUNI VIRGINIANAE N.F.
Fluidextract of Wild Cherry [Fldext. Prun. Virg.]
Prepared by using 200 cc. of glycerine and 400 cc. of Water as the macerating  menstruum, then percolating with a menstruum of 1250 cc. of alcohol and 150 cc. of water and continuing with one volume of alcohol and three volumes of water as the menstruum.
The dose is one-half to one fluidrachm (2 - 4 cc )

FLUIDEXTRACTUM QUASSIAE. N. F.
Fluidextract of Quassia [Fldext. Quass,]
Prepared by using one volume of alcohol and two volumes of water, as the  menstruum. This affords an excellent means of obtaining the effects of quassia.  It has the advantage over the tincture of not requiring so large an amount of  alcohol.
The dose is from five to fifteen minims ( 0.3 -1.0 cc.)

FLUIDEXTRACTUM QUERCUS. N. F.
Fluidextract of Quercus [Fldext. Querc.]
Prepared by using 100 cc. of glycerin, 500 cc. of alcohol and 400 cc. of  water as menstruum I. and diluted alcohol as menstruum II.
The official dose is fifteen minims ( 1 cc. ) but it is rarely used  internally.

FLUIDEXTRACTUM SANGUINARlAE. N.F.
Fluidextract of Sanguinaria [Fldext. Sanguin.]
Prepared by using 50 cc. of hydrochloric acid, 200 cc. of water and 750 cc.  of alcohol as menstruum and three volumes of alcohol and one volume of water as  menstruum II. The former process used citric, instead of hydrochloric, acid.
The dose is from one to five minims ( 0.06 - 0.3 cc.)

This is made with a menstruum of alcohol.

FLUIDEXTRACTUM SARSAPARILLAE COMPOSITUM. N.F.
Compound Fluidextract of Sarsaparilla [Fldext. Sarsap. Co.]
This is practically the same as the compound fluidextract of the U.S. IX and  contains sarsaparilla, licorice, sassafras and mezereum. It is made with a  mixture of 100 cc. of glycerin, 500 cc. of alcohol and 400 cc. of water as  menstruum and diluted alcohol as menstruum II.
The dose is from thirty to sixty minims (2 - 4 cc.)

Prepared by using diluted alcohol as the menstruum. It contains stillingia,  corydalis, iris, sambucus, chimaphila, coriander, and xanthoxylum berries. It is  a relic of therapeutic superstition.
The dose is from thirty to sixty mini-ms (2 - 4 cc.)

One hundred cc. of fluidextract of stramonium yields not less than 0.22 Gm.  nor more than 0.28 Gm. of the alkaloids of stramonium. N.F. Prepared by using  four volumes of alcohol and one volume of water as the menstruum. An assay is  provided in the text.
The dose is one minim ( 0.05 cc )

This represents 21.5 per cent. each of trifolium, glycyrrhiza, and berberis with half that quantity of cascara amarga, lappa, phytolacca, stillingia, and 3  per cent. of xanthoxylum. What is to be hoped from such a conglomeration of useless remedies is a conundrum.
The official dose is given as one fluidrachm (4 cc.)
